Blog: Next New

It would be interesting to see any different types of new media that could exist in the future that do not exist right now. A new type of new media that could exist in the future is communicating through 3D holograms. These 3D holograms will be realistic and it will seem like the person is actually there. A sophisticated camera can scan a person and recreate a carbon copy of them in hologram form. This will move digital communication even further because people will now be able to talk to each other as if they were really there. Practical uses could be for business meetings and could be more useful since body language is also a form of communication. In terms of personal use, friends and families can feel closer to each other if they live far away since it is almost like they have never left. This idea is similar to the holograms in Star Wars, but instead of a blue hologram, the quality will be more crisp and the color schemes will match.

Blog: Wiki So Far

So far I have contributed to the League of Legends wiki. I edited portions of the wiki where the information was outdated. Specifically, there were a couple of game modes that were retired by Riot games since player counts were not as high as other game modes. I contributed to the wiki by talking about season 10 changes that will drastically change the game play for players in Summoner's Rift. Specifically, the elemental drakes in the game will now have more passive and active impact on the map and on bonuses for players. There are also physical map changes in the game that will promote more dueling between players. I have also edited the layout a bit by adding in lines to clearly separate different topics from each other. I also included an image to help illustrate what changes are coming to League of Legends.

Blog: P2P

File sharing is the process of distributing multiple programs or documents across a number of platforms. You can file share through portable storage like USBs or you can share online through platforms like DropBox. P2P File sharing is a type of file sharing where two peers directly share files with each other. One way you can use P2P file sharing is by sending each other different types of media like music and movies. A more useful P2P file sharing example is lending each other money online. A company known as Lending Club allows people to invest and put in money that other people can loan out (Kaufman). The investors make a sizable return on their investments and the borrowers have lower interest rates to pay off. Overall the system of loaning out to each other outside of banks can be useful especially for those that do not have the time or luxury to build their credit score. The only concern that comes from this P2P file sharing of money is the insurance of payment. What would happen...

Advice

There any many ways that Baruch could used new media to improve the college. Having multiple social platforms representing the school, you can quickly update students on any announcements like school being closed due to extraneous weather conditions. Sometimes e-mails may not be the fastest platform to reach students since students use social media more often. Twitter would be a great platform to give students quick announcement updates. Baruch could also use social platforms for students to ask any questions. Each department could have their own social media account as another means to provide assistance to students with inquiries. Students could also view any clubs sponsored by Baruch on these social media platforms and get a taste of what they want to join. Instead of just one day used to show off clubs, new media can be used 24/7 to showcase each clubs' interests and goals.

Privacy

New media is used and maintained on online platforms that contain various pieces of information about the user. Due to this sensitive information being online, privacy and confidentiality are major points to continually be addressed with new media. Having weak securities in place for the users can result in them being exposed to the entire internet and can bring many damages upon the user. There needs to be a strong system in place to prevent hackers or other individuals from infiltrating into people's accounts. Perhaps, there is a whistleblower that wants to protect their identity from whatever organization they exposed. If their identity was exposed, then the whistleblower would have potentially faced repercussions from that organization. Another example could be you posting statuses, but having it set to be viewed by friends only. If privacy was not enforced, any stranger could pry into your life by looking at your statuses that were meant for your friends.

HW Creativity

Creativity comes in many different shapes and sizes. New media can be a positive outlet for nurturing creativity due to the mass amounts of people that can contribute and be inspired by different ideas. One example of this are video mashups. Mashups are when you edit different clips from cartoon or movies and have a different audio playing in the background. The reason behind is to take well known scenes and create creative and comedic value out of it. Even Nickelodeon sees the comedic value and sees mashups as a fair use of its copy righted content (Barnes, 2007). One of the best examples of new media fostering creativity is the use of online games. Specifically, Minecraft is an online who's sole purpose is to be an outlet for creativity. Multiple people can come together and build projects or explore the vast world together. New Media to creativity is like an enzyme, it speeds up the process of the reaction. The reaction being a burst of creativity.

Creativity and New Media

Image
Initially when I think about creativity and new media, I think of Minecraft. Minecraft is an online game where you can build many different things using the large types of blocks available to you. However, I decided to check out Second Life. Second life is a virtual game where you can interact with others and you can pretty much do anything. If you wanna play games and be an adventurer, you can travel to an area where those relevant to that topic exist. When I loaded into the game, I had the option to pick and choose a character from a long list of options. There is the possibility of also customizing your avatar to whatever you wish to change it to. I visited different areas, but I stuck around the music arena the longest. In this world, you can even play music as the DJ and have an audience of people. Included below is a snapshot of my avatar playing music on a stage while strobe lights are flashing everywhere. This virtual world has many creative opportunities where curious people c...

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used for many different applications. It can be used positively by using games like Minecraft to help expand the creative side to growing children (Mehta, 2013). Using Minecraft in a 3D world where children can explore will have a bigger impact in letting kids exercise their imagination. Another positive application for virtual worlds is helping deal with autism. Autism often allows for real life interactions to be stress inducing for both sides of the party. Virtual worlds can create real life peaceful environments and help ease patients with autism into be more social by interacting with people online (Saidi, 2008). Since virtual worlds are controlled, there won't be any surprised factors like in the real world that can inhibit or backtrack any progress of people with autism. A negative aspect to virtual worlds can be addiction. Some people might crave to be in a virtual world and not in the real world. This can be theoretically worse than normal game addict...

Blog about Twitter

A twitter discussion is definitely much shorter than a BlackBoard discussion. It's arguably harder to have a discussion on Twitter because there is a shorter word cap. I think you might get better discussions out of Twitter since when you're preparing your response, you need to keep it short and straight to the point. I would say an in-class discussion is more the same as to a BlackBoard discussion than a Twitter discussion since they have no word cap. Preparing a shorter and more efficient response can be harder and may take longer time.

Bog: Social networking sites

I visited Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and SnapChat just to see different apps for social networking. Facebook looks to be the basic level of social networking and what we can expect. From posting pictures or comments or tagging others in memes, it really encompasses all of what you'd expect in social media. Instagram is Facebook, but with more emphasis on posting pictures and comments. It has a very artistic feel to it and makes scrolling through various pictures easy. SnapChat is more of the messenger version of Instagram since you send a picture with a message attached. Twitter is the fast-food version of social networking since you are posting quick messages. Personally, I prefer using Facebook since its the social networking platform I have used the longest.

Blog Social Networking

There are many ways to use blog social networking to your advantage. One of these ways is to use the platform to further deepen your portfolio for a job. Especially in fields like marketing, having the ability to maintain a social networking platform will be very beneficial. One unique benefit to using blog social networking is being updated in real time of any situation. For a a skin repair surgery, the staff updated the surgery status hourly for the parents (Parker-Pope, 2009). The parents didn't have to wait to hear about the status of the surgery till the end. This eliminates a lot of the burden of worrying since the parents were constantly updated in real time. These technologies definitely have a 'dark side' due to the fact that people can post about anything. This can result in some negative reactions or comments. An example can be seen in this when a politician disregarded President Obama's speech as boring and that he would rather watch sports (Stanley, 20...

Blog v Wiki

Blogs are a more personal way of sharing a person's experiences on an online platform. Wikis are the more formal version of blogs where multiple people can contribute to the platform. Both share the same goal of being a resource to other people who need more knowledge or insight into a specific topic or lifestyle. Walmart uses blogs as a platform for reviews for any products that they supply, unfiltered (Barbaro, 2008). This allows people and Walmart to see a more personalized and 'real' review of various different products. This can be seen as blogs being used for collaboration on creating personalized reviews for various different products. Blogs can also be commented on which can deepen the insight that the original post provided. On the flip side, Tony Pagliarulo and his team for EMC used the wiki platform to facilitate their projects. They used the wiki to update and expand on any ideas or details they had for the project (Locher, 2008). Wiki has entered a more mode...

Analysis of Online Gaming: Society's Companion or Opponent?

The project I have chosen to work on is the Analysis of Online Gaming: Society's Companion or Opponent? In recent years, online gaming has exploded and propelled into the huge business it is today. The focus of this project will be the advantages and disadvantages of online gaming. I will research different experiments conducted in the past in relation to the effects of online gaming or gaming in general. I will also talk about the different experiences people have faced with online gaming. One of the benefits of online gaming that I will touch upon is the need to develop teamwork and communicate with others. One of the disadvantages would be the protection of people's identity online which can allow for some distasteful interactions. These are just little bits and pieces to the project overall. I will go into more detail and list out more points to support both sides of the argument.
